New road to link Thailand with Vangvieng
The upgrade of a road linking National Road No. 13 in Hinheup district with Road No. 11 in Vang village, Meun district is set to drive the tourism industry, with foreign tourists expected to flock to Vientiane province's popular destinations including Vangvieng.
Vientiane province's Department of Information, Culture and Tourism Deputy Director Mr Bounyong Sibountham made the comment when speaking to Vientiane Times on the future development of tourism in the province yesterday.
“The road will allow a shortcut between Vangvieng and the border crossing point between the province and neighbouring Thailand,” Mr Bounyong said.
The 130-km long road's starting point will be in the province's Hinheup district capital town and will run through Feuang district before ending at Vang village, Meun district, which is located on the Mekong River bank opposite Pak Chom district in Thailand.
According to Vientiane province's Department of Public Works and Transport, the road had been under reconstruction with the work beginning early this year. It was also scheduled for completion within four years.
Mr Bounyong, who is also in charge of tourism in the province, said the new circular route would be an important addition to the road network connecting the main destinations of Vientiane, Vangvieng and Luang Prabang province, as well as the province's neighbouring Chiang Khan town, which was a popular destination in Thailand.
According to the department, tourists arrivals in the province have been increasing with more than 92,000 people (over 64,000 foreigners) visiting the district in the past seven months, generating 42 billion kip in income for the local community.
Thailand is an air transportation hub in the region and is also the main gate for international tourists entering Laos.
Mr Bounyong said as the pr ovince has many attractive tourism sites, the provision of direct access and better transportation facilities in the area would be a way to attract more visitors to the province.
Private investment in tourism in Vientiane province has also increased over the past five years, reaching536 billion kip with 494 billion kip in hotels, guesthouses and resorts.
Mr Bounyong also noted the province's plans on the development of the sites at the Nam Ngum and Nam Lik reservoirs as tourist destinations, which would also be included in the province's tourism programme.
For Nam Ngum reservoir, around 30,000-35,000 people visit the site each year and about 6,000 people visited during the Lao New Year holiday. Around 10 percent of these visitors were foreigners.
