ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) — A St. Paul police chase ended with shots fired and a suspect dead Sunday afternoon.
Police said it all started when the male suspect crashed his car on Jackson Street near East Cook Avenue. The man then got out of the car and began shooting before taking a silver SUV by force.
Police caught up with the suspect — identified Monday as 20-year-0ld Yee Vang of St. Paul — on West Minnehaha Avenue near Arundel Street. He was shot and killed by police, but not before a 14-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet. It was a dangerous situation as neighbors in the area are still horrified by the sight of the boy running for help.
Witnesses to the incident said the boy was just walking with a friend when hit by the stray bullet. The incident started about at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday with a car crash on the city’s north side.
Investigators said Vang was involved in the crash and tried to leave the scene by committing a carjacking. Police said two people were inside that car. During Vang’s attempt to get the car, police said he fired randomly at the people in the area who had nothing to do with the incident.
When police caught up with Vang on West Minnehaha Avenue near Arundel Street, he began firing at police immediately so officers shot the suspect.
We talked with neighbors in the area who tried to help the young boy who was shot.
“The boys come tearing into the garage, one was yelling he had been shot. I called 911, made sure he wasn’t bleeding out, got him to sit down and held his hand until the cops got there,” said Chris Ellis of St. Paul.
That boy is being treated at Children’s Hospital.
Authorities said Vang died on his way to the hospital after being shot. Two officers have also been treated for injuries in the incident and released. In all, four officers were involved. They are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure for these types of incidents.
It’s not known if the two people who were victims of the carjacking were hurt. The incident remains
